Fossil Natural Gas and Renewable Natural Gas

Fossil natural gas, a domestically produced gaseous fuel, is readily available through the utility infrastructure. Whether produced via conventional or renewable methods, this clean-burning alternative fuel must be compressed (CNG) or liquefied (LNG) for use in vehicles.

Renewable natural gas (RNG) is a renewable source of methane, the primary constituent in natural gas is produced from breakdown of organics (MSW, yard/food waste, sewage, manure) in absence of oxygen (anaerobic digestion) biogas (or LFG) is purified to remove contaminants (primarily CO2 and H2S). Following purification, RNG contains >90% methane. RNG is comparable to fossil natural gas and considered a “drop-in” fuel. In other words, RNG can be used in any natural gas engine.
